Five lifestyle behaviors lower dementia risk by 60 percent

As we approach an epidemic in the number of newly diagnosed cases of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, irrefutable evidence continues to emerge supporting the science behind following simple lifestyle modifications to dramatically lower the risk of developing memory-robbing illnesses and most other chronic diseases as well. Publishing in the journal PLOS One, a research team from the Cardiff University School of Medicine in the United Kingdom has identified five lifestyle behaviors that have been shown to reduce the risk of cognitive decline, and researchers say these healthy habits are more beneficial than medical treatments or preventative procedures.

Researchers identified exercise as the most important lifestyle factor to lower dementia risk

The researchers followed a cohort of 2,235 men aged 45-49 from 1979 to 2004 in the UK. During this period, incidences of diabetes, vascular disease, cancer and death were recorded, along with an examination in 2004 to determine cognitive state. After a detailed analysis of all available data, the scientists identified the following five healthy behaviors as being essential for the best chance of living a disease-free life: performing regular exercise, not smoking, maintaining a low body weight, following a healthy diet and having a low alcohol intake.

Additionally, the study demonstrated that the individuals who adhered to four or five of these behaviors had a 60 percent lowered risk of dementia and cognitive decline, and there were 70 percent fewer cases of diabetes, heart disease and stroke, compared with individuals who followed none of the behaviors. As far as reducing the risk for dementia, the scientists noted that regular moderate-intensity exercise was the strongest factor.

“What the research shows is that following a healthy lifestyle confers surprisingly large benefits to health,” the lead study author, Dr. Doug Brown, concluded. “We have known for some time that what is good for your heart is also good for your head, and this study provides more evidence to show that healthy living could significantly reduce the chances of developing dementia.”

Research is showing that the decisions you make about your nutrition, exercise, stress, and environmental toxin exposure can influence your health and fertility. Additionally, these lifestyle factors also influence the health and development of your baby once your pregnant! While some aspects of lifestyle may not be modifiable, there are many that can be modified in order to promote health and fertility. The main factors that are influential to creating a fertile environment in both men and women include:

Nutrition

Eating a clean diet of organic whole foods, plenty of antioxidants in berries and a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, essential fatty acids (like those from wild salmon and cod liver oil), nuts and seeds, and protein from organic, grass-fed animals will nourish your body, support your hormones and sexual health, reduce oxidative damage and inflammation, and create a healthy, well-functioning system that is ready to support new life. Strengthening your digestive integrity with organic whole foods is a foundational step to supporting your body’s fertility. A strong digestive system promotes a healthy immunity. Weight management

Osteomalacia and hypothyroid myopathy are often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a debilitating disease affecting around 5 million Americans. The two primary symptoms of fibromyalgia are muscle pain and fatigue. Other symptoms include sleep disturbances, “brain fog,” irritability, and anxiety or depression. Nearly one third of those suffering from fibromyalgia suffer from depression.

A diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made through symptoms alone; there is no lab test to confirm or deny the diagnosis. Doctors treat the disease with medications and recommend mild exercise, a good diet, and stress reduction.

If you have been diagnosed with this disease and thorough lab work was not completed, there is a possibility that you have been misdiagnosed. You may have osteomalacia or hypothyroidism.

Osteomalacia

Osteomalacia is a disease caused by vitamin D deficiency. The body is unable to “…deposit calcium into the collagen jello-like matrix in the bone. As a result, the covering on the bone which contains pain sensing nerves is easily deformed resulting in throbbing aching bone pain. Patients with osteomalacia often complain of achiness in their muscles and bones. These non-specific aches and pains in the bones and muscles are often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome,” writes Dr. Michael Holick, one of the world’s foremost authorities on vitamin D. Exposure to sunlight and/or vitamin D supplementation quickly resolves the symptoms.

It is difficult for many Americans to get enough exposure to sunlight if they live in the northern half of the country. In addition, many of us work inside all day and do not spend any significant time in the sun. If this is the case, Vitamin D supplementation is essential. An easy home test involves taking your temperature as soon as you wake in the morning for 3-5 days. Before you get out of bed, eat, or drink anything, take your temperature. If you are going to use a mercury thermometer, shake it down the night before. You want to move as little as possible because movement heats up the body. If your temperature was less than 97 three days in a row, there is no need to continue checking it. If it averages 97.6 or less for 5 days, or 97 for 3 days, this is an indicator for testing and treatment. Naturopathic supplements are available for hypothyroidism if you choose to avoid pharmaceuticals.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease–a painful debilitating disease. Though there are many dietary and lifestyle changes that may be incorporated into your arsenal to regain your health, first make sure your diagnosis is accurate. Regardless of which “disease” you are dealing with, be sure you are not deficient in vitamin D. Eat a healthy diet without additives, flavoring, preservatives or artificial colors. Never ingest GMOs.
